Dot Earth Blog: The Ivory-Driven Elephant Slaughter Continues
On October 27, Nick Brandt, a photographer and conservationist, photographed Qumquat, one of the best known matriarchs in the elephant population around Kenya?s Amboseli National Park, walking with two daughters, their young and other kin.
One day later, the old female and nearly all of the other elephants in this group were found slaughtered. Their faces had been hacked off by the poachers to be sure they gleaned every ounce of ivory from the tusks. (Click here for photographs of the result ? not for the squeamish.)
Read on for a description of this incident and the resulting hunt for the killers by Richard Bonham, who co-founded Big Life Foundation with Brandt a few years ago to raise money for anti-poaching patrols around the park. There?s?more on their work on Dot Earth (the?same post is here in Chinese). Here?s Bonham?s report from the field:
THREE GUNSHOTS, THEIR FATAL EFFECT, AND PURSUIT OF THE KILLERS
The crack of a heavy rifle, designed specially to kill elephants, is unmistakable. It?s a little like a sonic boom, a crash followed by a roll of sound not unlike thunder.
This is what the Big Life rangers, manning an observation point on the Tanzania border, heard on Sunday afternoon. Three shots in quick succession.
This triggered the radio network to burst into life, as they called in for support from Kenya Wildlife Service and other Big Life teams in the area. The reaction was textbook, and in less than an hour and half, a combined unit of Big Life and KWS rangers were on the scene.
As dusk set in, a ranger spotted three men. One of the poachers raised a rifle and fired at the rangers, sending the team scurrying for cover. It would have been suicide to continue the pursuit in the fading light, so the teams pulled back to resume the follow-up at first light.
I arrived by plane at sunrise the following day to give aerial support and look for carcasses. After an hour and half of fruitless searching, we received news that a fresh tusk, still covered in blood, had been found on the poachers? tracks. The follow-up team split up, some continuing with the poachers tracks, others backtracking to find the carcasses.
At midday the gut-wrenching news arrived. Three dead elephants had been found, their faces cut away, their ivory gone.
The team from Amboseli Elephant Research identified the dead as Qumquat, born in 1968, one of Amboseli?s most famous and oldest matriarchs, and her two daughters, Qantina and Quaye.
Just 24 hours before they were gunned down, Nick Brandt took the above photo of the three of them, alive on their last afternoon together.? You can see that he was just a few feet from the family, so trusting, so relaxed. Such easy pickings for poachers with a mind to murder for profit.
At the front is Qumquat, beyond her two daughters, Qantina and Quaye. As for the three youngest, two are missing, the younger almost certainly dead now. Only the youngest calf is alive, a story in and of itself?.
RESCUE OF QUMQUAT?S ORPHANED CALF
When the rangers found the carcasses, Qumquat?s youngest calf, only ten months old, was also there, watching over his mother?s?carcass. The calf, traumatized at having watched its mother shot and butchered, had stood vigil all night alone.
He was caught ? not easy ? and led to a position where the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust rescue team could get it onto a vehicle. He was then transferred to an aircraft chartered in from Nairobi, which then flew him back to the Sheldrick orphanage.
The professionalism of this operation, orchestrated by the Sheldrick Trust, was so smooth, that any First World emergency response ambulance would have been proud to have been a part of it. Sadly they have had too much practice in recent years.
All in all, it was a good example what can happen when everyone pulls together, in this case Big Life Foundation, Kenya Wildlife Service,? Amboseli Trust for Elephants and the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.
ARREST OF NOTORIOUS POACHER WHO KILLED QUMQUAT
Meanwhile, the poachers? tracks that the Big Life teams had been following had disappeared where the poachers entered settled country. Even bringing in the dog unit at this stage would have been fruitless.
But as it so often does, Big Life?s informer network came through. We were informed of the location of one of the key poachers, and the following day, the Big Life teams, in partnership with KWS, arrested him.
It was a notorious long-term poacher who, to be honest, we had already arrested a year ago. He had been jailed, but then released far too soon. This time, we are confident he will be put away for a long time. We also know the identity of one of the other poachers, who is in hiding. Generally, they eventually surface, and we will be waiting.
But it?s so disturbing, once again, how the poachers, greedy and brutal, gunned down Qumquat?s daughters, who possessed such small tusks, for just a few extra dollars. All in a day?s ?work?.
HELP US STOP THE KILLING
After a week in which Amboseli?s elephants suffered the worst single slaughter in some time, we ask ourselves what we need to do differently. We are determined to do more, to make sure that something like this does not happen again. There are two clear solutions:
MOBILE CAMPS?
We need rangers in the right place at the right time. The solution ? additional mobile camps ? is low tech, simple and reasonably cheap. Our permanent outposts would have?the capability of setting up 4-man mobile camps that can be deployed into areas as the wildlife moves, or where a poaching threat is deemed serious or imminent. The costs are just over $2000 per mobile camp, one for each of the 14 current outposts.
We believe that it will make a huge difference ? not just because it will mean we can get men to the scene faster, but also as a deterrent, because poachers will not know when and where the camps will be deployed.
DIGITAL RADIO NETWORK
Our current radio system, which has to cover the 2 million acres Big Life rangers patrol, is completely inefficient compared to the new digital systems. Amongst many major improvements, all the new digital radios, vehicle or handheld, have built in GPS, and as such can be tracked?in real time on screens in the radio room of Big Life HQ.
In an incident such as the Qumquat family killing, we would have known exactly where all our units were and which unit was best placed to respond. We could have then directed them much more efficiently. This could have made the difference in tracking down the poachers in time before they escaped.

New Jersey has filed lawsuits against eight businesses for allegedly?gouging customers with exorbitant prices in the days after Superstorm Sandy roared ashore, the state's attorney general said Friday.
The defendants, seven gas stations and a hotel, are accused of hiking their prices from?11 to 59 percent in the days after the storm. One gas station was charging as much as $5.50 a gallon,?Attorney General Jeffrey S. Chiesa said. The hotel, a Howard Johnson Express in Parsippany, N.J., allegedly raised its room rates to $119 after the storm, up 32 percent from the top rate of $90 just?prior to the storm.?
?We have received no indication that these defendants faced costs that would have made these excessive price increases necessary or justifiable. One gas station even paid less per gallon for a shipment of fuel after the storm than it had paid before the storm,? Chiesa said in a statement.
The lawsuits come as residents of New York and New Jersey continue to struggle with a gasoline shortage that has led to long lines and short tempers. On Thursday, New York City and Long Island joined New Jersey as areas where odd-even gas rationing is in effect. Drivers in the affected?areas?can only fill up on designated days, depending on their license plate numbers.
New Jersey?s anti-gouging law prohibits price hikes of more than 10 percent in an emergency in most cases. The law does make an exception for merchants who face increased costs, but the markup is still limited to 10 percent above normal levels,?according to the state attorney general?s office.?
New Jersey has received about 2,000 consumer complaints about gouging since ?a state of emergency was declared Oct. 27, and has issued 170 ?subpoenas to merchants, according to ?Eric T. Kanefsky, acting director of the state division of consumer affairs.
The defendants face fines of up to?$10,000 for their first offenses and $10,000 for subsequent offenses. Each sale is considered a separate offense. Prosecutors estimate that the gas station charging $5.50 for regular-grade gas made 230 sales on Nov.1, when the state of emergency was in effect.
On Monday, New York?s Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman said New York had ?zero tolerance? for price-gouging and announced that his office was investigating ?hundreds of complaints from consumers? in New York City, the Hudson Valley and on Long Island.
In New York, it is illegal to charge what the law defines as ?unconscionably excessive price[s]? on essentials like food, water, gas, generators, batteries and flashlights, as well as services like transportation.
The combination of pipeline and port closures has?contributed to a supply squeeze, and widespread power outages have prevented many gas stations from opening. Meanwhile millions of people have turned to ?generators to power their homes, adding to the demand.
Some 28 percent of gas stations in the New York metropolitan area did not have fuel available for sale on Thursday, down from 38 percent on Wednesday, the U.S. Energy Information Administration said on Friday
In announcing rationing, New York Mayor Michael?Bloomberg said the shortages could last another couple of weeks.

They say good things come to those who wait and retailers have waited long enough for a boost in sales! Looks like this might be the year.
Chase Paymentech talked to a variety of retailers and found that the majority (59%) of them expected 2012 sales to top those of 2011. They were also very optimistic about the percentage of sales coming in through online channels.

Seriously folks, it doesn?t get more plain than that. eCommerce is on the rise but mCommerce is still barely a blip on the radar.
I think this year, plenty of shoppers will be using their smartphones and tablets to get discounts, do research and locate gifts but this won?t be the year of the mobile Christmas, not yet. Next year maybe, now that tablets are flooding the market.
When asked what challenges ecommerce companies face this holiday season, surprisingly ?competitive pricing? came in second with only 25% of the vote. The biggest concern (52%) was ?reaching new customers.? ?Reaching return customers? came in third with 23%.
86% of these companies will be turning to Facebook for online promotions which blows my mind. I think it can be an effective tool for keeping current customers engaged but I don?t see it as a good tool for bringing in new customers. 70% said they?d be using Twitter and I like this idea better, mainly because Twitter posts are more searchable.
Pay-Per-Click advertising may be old school, but it?s still the best way to reach new customers. Great content on a website or blog will also help you land at the top of the search engine heap. You also might consider running a giveaway or incentivizing current customers to bring in referrals.
The one advantage online has over other forms of marketing is that it can be tweaked on the fly. So don?t be afraid to throw out a last minute promotion if sales aren?t what you hoped for after CyberMonday.

While the Eid festival following Ramadan is better known, Eid al-Adha is more significant to the Muslim calendar.

here, it's wouldn't be fair to let it just pass from your palms and store it in your toy cab or
any place you wish to store it and let dust and cubwebs enjoy the damn thing...so hear
goes...
PACKAGING
A major upgrade done by HT on the packaging. Instead of the usual
thin walled plastic cushion, a robust styrofur enclosure is being used on this figure.
This helps to ensure the monger is well secured. The box dimension is at a whooping
15"X19"X6.5". It somehow dwarfs the standard HT packaging if the usual 12" figs. It
weighs approximately 2.5 kgs (i think) and the carton box comes with its own handle
for easy carry..
ACCESORIES
I guess this wasn't expected, accessories are just too few to mention.The Oadiah head
sculpt, a necklace for Obadiah, two detachable booster for the left and right leg and
supersized "ex-wife".
There are loads of instructions on how to "play" along with this figure. Just don't get too
excited and start to twist and manhandle the poor thing. There will be lots of movement and
articulation, just read the manual, it really helps.
If you claim it in the HT shop, It's noticeable that there are staffs on the shop with
a loose IRON MONGER figure. They will help to demonstrate the features of this massive
figure.
Now the Fun part starts..
We start with the back portion first. It really is an awesome sight to behold all
the ball joints, universal joints and "hydraulic cylinders". These things really works! Truly an
engineering marvel in itself!
The back plates on the back opens easily, the left part houses the missile launcher
which is very cool since it is retractable. In order to retract it, you have to open the
upper plate firstm there are joints to flip the plates, but just add some TLC (Tender
Loving Care) while opening these plates.
Be very careful when extracting the shoulder launcher from its hidden state.
It caused me 20 minutes to pull it off. When the launcher is extended it
tends to hit the horizontal cylinders directly above it. What i did was, i slightly
pull it towards me, just enough to free up the extendable launcher and slowly
pull it.
The missile can be inserted from the back of the launcher, this requires a force fit.
Again a dose of TLC wouldn't break anything. The launcher can be swiveled at a 360 degrees,
but when i did that, the part becomes too loose to rotate already, nevertheless it's still quite
good.
On the left compartment, open the plate and you can see the battery compartment
for the chest and eye LEDS.
CHEST PART
The chest part is a marvel in itself. Opening it would require 2 hands.
Slightly pull the plates, you can feel a counter force but no worries,
just slowly pull it downwards.
Once the plates are down, slighly pull the chest part (reactor) and slowly pull
it downwards, the whole circular part will go along with.
Once its down, you now open up the head part as shown the photo.
You can now install the necklace and headsculpt. Just make sure the head us properly
placed so that when you close the head enclosure of the suit, the head sculpt won't get
any scratches.
Closing the figure will be to lower the head part first.
Then the reactor and the side plates.
THE ARMS
The arms will each have their individual switches similar to that of the IRON MAN armors. The
right arms has the retractable chain gun and an LED. Both hands have the articulated robotic
fingers which is can practically grasp any 1/6th accesories.

The left hand houses the mini rockets as well as a switch for the LED palm light.
THE FEET
The massive feet of this figure allows it to stand freely without the aide of any stand
from the usual HT releases. The flaps can be deployed easily by just opening the back
flaps.
Once it is deployed you can pull the flight stabilizers as shown, but careful on this part,
it comes easy to loosen.
At flight mode, the flaps are opened and you can then insert the boosters. Just insert the
guide pegs and your ready to fly..worry about the "icing problem" some other day lol.
A word of caution, the articulation on this figure is really awesome. just check when turning
the arms, make sure the joints are not interfering with each other. These mechanical joints
are made of plastic and surely will be easy to break if not handled carefully.
Personally, this might be the mother of all 1/6th as far as my personal
collection is concerned. Truly a must have figure especially, if you arean IRON MAN
completist. It doesn't get any better than this. This is as real as it gets...
