Dolphin society adopts freewheeling lifestyle

An unprecedented open society of bottlenose dolphins has just been identified in Western Australia.

Most mammals, including humans, live in areas with boundaries. This population of dolphins, described in the latest Proceedings of the Royal Society B, has no such limits, even though dolphin relationships can be incredibly intense.

?Other mammals with complex social relationships live in a semi-closed group based on one or more reproductive females,? co-author Richard Connor told Discovery News, explaining that the groups or territories of these other animals ?are defended by one or both sexes.?

NEWS: Are dolphins the world's second-smartest animals?

?An open society is one without such defended boundaries,? added Connor, a biology professor at UMass Dartmouth.

He and colleagues Srdan Randic, William Sherwin and Michael Krutzen examined the ranging and behavior of over 120 adult dolphins in a large study area at Shark Bay, Western Australia. They focused on males and their very complex social lives.

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: Jurors show a characteristic pattern of brain activity when they decide to be lenient on a criminal, and the strength of that pattern can vary from juror to juror, researchers say.

    3. Dolphin society adopts freewheeling lifestyle
    4. Ancient stone monolith likely marked seasons

Male bottlenose dolphins also were found to engage in extensive bisexuality, combined with periods of exclusive homosexuality. Male pairs, or even trios, cooperate to sequester and herd individual females during the mating season. Most males are also members of second-order alliances consisting of four to 14 males. Such relationships appear to be long-lasting, with one known seven-member group still intact after 17 years.

At first the researchers thought the dolphins lived somewhat like chimpanzees, since male bonding is strong, but in chimps can also lead to patrolling and defending community territory. But because of their open watery range, the Shark Bay dolphins may instead have ranges that overlap with those of other dolphins in the area.

VIDEO: Dolphins invent a new way to hunt fish

While dolphins can be aggressive, their ?make love not war? lifestyle seems to be more peaceful than that of some other mammals, possibly even humans.

?We have seen precious little aggression between females,? Connor said. ?It does occur and is probably less frequent and more subtle.?

As for males, even though ?they are capable of serious aggression,? he said, ?they don?t squabble constantly.?

Terrestrial mammals may simply be more tied to a home base or hearth, although survival can depend on mutual dependence for both humans and dolphins.

Connor and his team believe that odontocetes (dolphins and sperm whales), humans and elephants form a ?big three? group in the animal kingdom, since we all have big brains, have complex social lives, can display overlapping ranges, and have a relatively low physical cost of locomotion. Elephants have the lowest cost of locomotion recorded for any terrestrial animal.

?Elephant babies can?t run or hide ? they are just big steaks,? Connor explained.

It could then be that certain shared circumstances among the ?big three? animals favor alliances, which could have driven big brains, social cognition and more.

NEWS: Dolphin intelligence explained

Somewhat similar pregnancies might also link the big three. Elephants endure a 22-month pregnancy. Pregnancies clearly slow human moms-to-be. The same holds true for dolphins.

Shawn Noren from the Institute of Marine Science, University of California at Santa Cruz, recently donned scuba gear and followed some pregnant female dolphins. Noren found that they ?had huge protrusions where the fetus was sitting towards the back end of the body.? This caused the females to move less and more slowly, relying on their pod for protection and cooperative feeding.

Despite the open society existence, life isn?t all joy for male dolphins either.

?I work on the male dolphins, and their social lives are very intense; it seems there is constant drama,? Connor said.

?I have often thought, as I watched their complicated alliance relationships, that their social lives would be mentally and physically exhausting, and I?m glad I?m not a dolphin," he said.

Research will help understand body's response to superbugs

How and when our blood clots is one of those incredibly complex and important processes in our body that we rarely think about. If your blood doesn't clot and you cut yourself, you could bleed to death, if your blood clots too much, you could be in line for a heart attack or stroke. Dr. Hans Vogel, a professor at the University of Calgary, has thought a lot about blot clotting and recently published research in the prestigious Journal of the American Chemical Society that helps to better understand the clotting process.

Vogel and his graduate student Hao Huang were able to determine the molecular 3D structure of a protein in blood platelets and a receptor that sticks through the membrane of the cell to the outside. Platelets are tiny cells specialized for clotting reactions. The receptor protein is unique for platelets and directly controls blood clot formation. Other scientists have unsuccessfully attempted to map this structure, but Huang and Vogel were the first to make it work.

"The goal of the research is to provide a molecular level understanding of the blood clot regulatory process," says Vogel, of the Department of Biological Sciences in the Faculty of Science. "Eventually the long term goal is to interfere in that, although one has to be extremely careful with such a delicate process. Oftentimes, these molecular structures are useful for pharmaceutical companies and for follow-up research projects that take them as a starting point to develop new drugs."

This particular piece of research is also related to Vogel's lab's larger goal, which is to figure out how our body responds to foreign invasions of bacteria, particularly in relation to superbugs that aren't treatable by antibiotics. "You don't really want to have an infection starting in and around a blood clot," says Vogel. "So once a platelet is lodged into position it releases all sorts of proteins and then it attracts all these factors that are antimicrobial. Platelets get together with white blood cells and together they orchestrate a really important antimicrobial response."

The next step in Vogel's research is to try to find out more about this antimicrobial response and build on it. "A lot of science is putting pieces into a large puzzle," says Vogel. "I've been involved in active research for 30 years. If you look over your career, then you make many incremental steps forward, but everything together builds a big picture. The paper we recently published proved to be a very important piece of the puzzle." Vogel's research in this area is supported by Alberta Innovates Health Solutions and the Canadian Institutes for Health Research.

Basics About Car Finance Loans - Financial Management Service ...

Buying a car is a very exciting activity that most home owners are caught up in. And whilst interest rates can be extremely unaffordable people still find themselves trying to finance loans from banks and car dealerships. And whilst this is well and good there are quite a number of traps that everyone must be careful enough to avoid. Therefore car finance loans should be taken with the greatest caution.

The very most important thing is the overall cost of buying a car. Do not just wait for approval as the most heart stopping process. In actual fact knowing how much the total cost of this hire purchase is. Generally this is the figure that you should use in comparing the various personal loan options.

Interest rates are also another notable cause of concern. The rate of interest on the loan is the amount of profit that a creditor makes for giving you a loan.

Personal loans attract lower rates of interests than car dealerships for some reason or another. So whenever you have a good credit score there is a very good chance that a credit provider will give a discount on interest.

Something else that attracts a lowering of interest is a down payment. A down payment is sort of like the security or deposit on a car. This tells the creditor that you are in a position to pay back the loan and this gives them the confidence to approve a loan application.

Paying for a personal loan can be difficult sometimes owing to job retrenchments and unexpected expenses. And even though you might think the worst that could happen is repossession, but it is not. Make sure you pay off the loan on time as not doing so can negatively impact on your credit score. And like I mentioned before a bad credit score can lead to loan applications in the future being turned down.

Baby Girl Found Alone In Field 10 Miles From Family's Home After ...

INDIANAPOLIS (CBS/AP) ? A hospital spokeswoman says a 2-year-old girl found alive in an Indiana field after violent storms is the sole survivor of her immediate family.

Cis Gruebbel is a spokeswoman for Kosair Children?s Hospital in Louisville, Ky. She said Saturday that the girl?s mother, father, 2-month-old sister and 3-year-old brother all died Friday when the storms devastated southern Indiana.

Gruebbel says the toddler is in critical condition.

She would not identify the child and says she could not provide details on the child?s ordeal. She says extended family members are at the hospital with the child.

Melissa Richardson, a spokeswoman for the hospital in Salem, Ind. where the child was first taken, said the child?s family is from New Pekin, Ind., and she was found near her home.

Officials at the hospital where the girl was first taken said Saturday that authorities were still trying to figure out how she ended up in the field alone. Richardson says the child?s family is from New Pekin, Ind., about 10 miles south of where the child was found.

A string of violent storms demolished small towns in Indiana and cut off rural communities in Kentucky as the early season tornado outbreak killed more than 30 people, and the death toll rose as daylight broke on Saturday?s search for survivors.

Massive thunderstorms, predicted by forecasters for days, threw off dozens of tornadoes as they raced Friday from the Gulf Coast to the Great Lakes. Twisters crushed blocks of homes, knocked out cellphones and landlines, ripped power lines from broken poles and tossed cars, school buses and tractor-trailers onto roads made impassable by debris.

Weather that put millions of people at risk killed at least 32 in four states ? Alabama, Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio ? but both the scale of the devastation and the breadth of the storms made an immediate assessment of the havoc?s full extent all but impossible.

In Kentucky, the National Guard and state police headed out to search wreckage for an unknown number of missing. In Indiana, authorities searched dark county roads connecting rural communities that officials said ?are completely gone.?

In Henryville, the birthplace of Kentucky Fried Chicken founder Colonel Harland Sanders, volunteers pushed shopping carts full of water and food down littered streets, handing supplies to anyone in need. Hundreds of firefighters and police zipped around town, where few recognizable structures remained; all of Henryville?s schools were destroyed. Wind had blown out the windows of the Henryville Community Presbyterian Church and gutted the building.

?It?s all gone,? said Andy Bell, who was guarding a friend?s demolished service garage, not far from where a school bus stuck out from the side of a restaurant and a parking lot where a small classroom chair jutted from a car window.

?It was beautiful,? he said, looking around at the town of about 2,000 north of Louisville, Ky. ?And now it?s just gone. I mean, gone.?

Susie Renner, 54, said she saw two tornadoes barreling down on Henryville within minutes of each other. The first was brown from being filled with debris; the second was black.

?I?m a storm chaser,? Renner said, ?and I have never been this frightened before.?

Friday?s tornado outbreak came two days after an earlier round of storms killed 13 people in the Midwest and South, and forecasters at the National Weather Service?s Storm Prediction Center had said the day would be one of a handful this year that warranted its highest risk level. By 10 p.m., the weather service had issued 269 tornado warnings. Only 189 warnings were issued in all of February.

?We knew this was coming. We were watching the weather like everyone else,? said Clark County, Ind., Sheriff Danny Rodden. ?This was the worst case scenario. There?s no way you can prepare for something like this.?

Fourteen people were reported killed in Indiana, including four in Chelsea, where a man, woman and their 4-year-old great-grandchild died in one house. Tony Williams, owner of the Chelsea General Store, said the child and mother were huddled in a basement when the storm hit and sucked the 4-year-old out her hands. The mother survived, but her 70-year-old grandparents were upstairs; both died.

?They found them in the field, back behind the house,? Williams said.

Two people died further north in Holton, where it appeared a tornado cut a diagonal swath down the town?s tiny main drag, demolishing a cinderblock gas station but leaving a tiny white church intact down the road.

?We are going to continue to hit every county road that we know of that there are homes on and search those homes,? said Indiana State Police Sgt. Jerry Goodin. ?We have whole communities and whole neighborhoods that are completely gone. We?ve had a terrible, terrible tragedy here.?

The death toll rose to at least 14 in Kentucky, where National Guard troops and Kentucky State Police troopers were dispatched along with a rescue team to counties east and south of Lexington.

In West Liberty, Ky., Stephen Burton heard the twister coming and pulled his 23-year-old daughter to safety, just before the tornado destroyed the second story of the family?s home.

?I held onto her and made it to the center of the house, next to a closet,? Burton said. ?I just held onto her, and I felt like I was getting sand-blasted on my back.?

Endre Samu, public affairs officer for the Kentucky State Police in Morehead, said three people died in West Liberty and at least 75 were injured. With the hospital damaged in the storm, some patients were being transferred to area hospitals, he said.

?All of the downtown area was just devastated,? Samu said.

Tornadoes were reported in at least six Ohio cities and towns, including the village of Moscow, where a council member found dead in her home was one of at least three people killed in the state. Several dozen homes were damaged, some stripped down to their foundations, and the Clermont County commissioners called a state of emergency for the first time in 15 years.

One person was reported dead Saturday in Alabama. Emergency Management Agency spokeswoman Yasamie August said an apparent tornado that hit Jackson Gap injured two others as well. She didn?t have more details.

Emergency officials in Lee County, Va., said damage from a possible tornado left a two- to three-mile path of destruction that may reach far into Tennessee, and damage reports were expected to increase with daylight.

?We don?t know. We can?t get down there,? Emergency Management Director Jason Crabtree said of areas stretching south of the Virginia line. ?This thing may be eight to 10 miles long.?

Questions You Need to Ask Your Personal Injury ... - Askinglaw

Once you hire a personal injury lawyer in Chicago, you will need to make sure you understand all of the proceedings of the case. Personal injury law is definitely not that easy to understand even when it seems straightforward. Because of this, you may find yourself with numerous questions from the beginning of the case to the end. In order to make sure you understand everything that will be going on during your lawsuit, it is vital that you get your questions answered and that means asking questions of your personal injury lawyer in Chicago.

There will be many questions that you may have on your own, and definitely you will need to make sure you get those questions answered. In order to get started on your case, then here are some questions that you should ask your personal injury lawyer in Chicago.

Will I Have to Pay Up Front?

Personal injury cases can be tricky. There is definitely a chance for a big payoff in the end, but there is also a chance that the case will fall through. Because of this, then many personal injury lawyers handle their fees in different ways. They may bill by the hour and require you to pay them whether or not your case ever even makes it to court. This could be quite expensive for you, and since you are already facing expense from medical bills, you will not need even more expense. Other lawyers will only expect to be paid if you win the case. In order to make sure you know what you can expect from your expenses, then you need to find out in the beginning how your personal injury lawyer in Chicago will expect to be paid.

Do I Have a Realistic Case?

An experienced personal injury lawyer in Chicago will have a better idea of whether or not you have a case that can actually be won. The sad truth is that not all personal injury situations are actually winnable. Before you get too deep into the lawsuit, it would be a good idea that you know whether or not you have a realistic chance of winning. Do not be afraid to ask your lawyer up front if they think that you can win your personal injury case. There is no sense in wasting time and money on something that cannot be won.

    How Long Could This Take?

This is not a question that will be easily answered. There are so many factors that can affect how long your case could take, from the actual court date to how the person or company you are suing handles it. However, an experienced personal injury lawyer in Chicago will certainly be able to give you a rough estimate of how long the case could take. Keep in mind too that there is a statute of limitations on all personal injury cases, so the lawyer can give you an estimate based on this as well.

Make sure you always get your questions answered before you approach your lawsuit so that you understand everything that is going on throughout the case. The questions above are a good way to start, but do not be afraid to add your own questions too.

A supercharged protein reduces damage from heart attack

ScienceDaily (Mar. 1, 2012) ? Researchers from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill reduced damage from a heart attack by 50 percent by enhancing a protective protein found in mice and humans. The study, in which mice were bred to make a supercharged version of the protein focal adhesion kinase, or FAK, appeared March 1 in the online edition of the journal Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology.

"This study shows that we can enhance existing cell survival pathways to protect heart cells during a heart attack," said Joan Taylor, PhD, associate professor in UNC's department of pathology and laboratory medicine. Taylor added that the findings could lead to new treatment approaches for heart attacks and may have broad implications for scientists seeking to manipulate the body's natural defensive systems.

During a heart attack, oxygen-deprived heart cells emit signals that activate the usually inert protein FAK, like the cry of a damsel in distress awakening her sleeping knight. If the gallant FAK arrives in time, it can save the cell and reduce permanent damage to the heart.

Taylor and her colleagues were intrigued by FAK's protective abilities. "We thought if we could activate FAK to a greater extent, then we could better protect those heart cells," said Taylor. Based on their previous studies that defined the signals induced by FAK in heart cells, they reasoned that expression of FAK set to an "always-on" position would eventually suffer uncontrolled inflammation and heart failure. "Simply having more of a good thing isn't always better," said Taylor. "The dynamics of the protein's activities are important to appropriately transmitting those survival signals."

The researchers then adjusted their formula to create a new protein they called "SuperFAK." To enhance its protective abilities without the harmful side effects, SuperFAK was primed for activation -- ready to rush to the scene at the slightest provocation from stressed heart cells -- but remained under the control of the mice's natural feedback systems that would shut it off when the crisis passed.

Mice with SuperFAK showed a much stronger FAK response during a heart attack than mice with the natural protein, and three days later had about 50 percent less heart damage. Critically, SuperFAK deactivated at the appropriate time, so the eight-week follow-up revealed no detrimental effects.

The findings offer evidence that, rather than simply activating or de-activating key proteins, researchers can benefit from a more nuanced approach that taps into the body's natural feedback loops. "I think folks could use this idea to exploit mutations in other molecules -- by thinking about how to modify the protein so that it can be under natural controls," said Taylor. "Negative feedback loops are important because they 'reset' the system."

The findings also may help researchers augment FAK in patients undergoing chemotherapy. Some chemotherapy drugs are known to break down FAK, leaving patients' hearts more vulnerable to damage.
