Transcript of Mitt Romney's remarks

A transcript of former Gov. Mitt Romney's remarks Thursday night at the Republican National Convention, as provided by the Republican Party:

___

Mr. Chairman, delegates. I accept your nomination for president of the United States of America.

I do so with humility, deeply moved by the trust you have placed in me. It is a great honor. It is an even greater responsibility.

Tonight I am asking you to join me to walk together to a better future. By my side, I have chosen a man with a big heart from a small town. He represents the best of America, a man who will always make us proud? my friend and America's next vice president, Paul Ryan.

In the days ahead, you will get to know Paul and Janna better. But last night America got to see what I saw in Paul Ryan? a strong and caring leader who is down to earth and confident in the challenge this moment demands.

I love the way he lights up around his kids and how he's not embarrassed to show the world how much he loves his mom.

But Paul, I still like the playlist on my iPod better than yours.

Four years ago, I know that many Americans felt a fresh excitement about the possibilities of a new president. That president was not the choice of our party but Americans always come together after elections. We are a good and generous people who are united by so much more than what divides us.

When that hard fought election was over, when the yard signs came down and the television commercials finally came off the air, Americans were eager to go back to work, to live our lives the way Americans always have? optimistic and positive and confident in the future.

That very optimism is uniquely American.

It is what brought us to America. We are a nation of immigrants. We are the children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren of the ones who wanted a better life, the driven ones, the ones who woke up at night hearing that voice telling them that life in that place called America could be better.

They came not just in pursuit of the riches of this world but for the richness of this life.

Freedom.

Freedom of religion.

Freedom to speak their mind.

Freedom to build a life.

And yes, freedom to build a business. With their own hands.

This is the essence of the American experience.

We Americans have always felt a special kinship with the future.

When every new wave of immigrants looked up and saw the Statue of Liberty, or knelt down and kissed the shores of freedom just ninety miles from Castro's tyranny, these new Americans surely had many questions. But none doubted that here in America they could build a better life, that in America their children would be more blessed than they.

But today, four years from the excitement of the last election, for the first time, the majority of Americans now doubt that our children will have a better future.

It is not what we were promised.

Every family in America wanted this to be a time when they could get ahead a little more, put aside a little more for college, do more for their elderly mom who's living alone now or give a little more to their church or charity.

Every small business wanted these to be their best years ever, when they could hire more, do more for those who had stuck with them through the hard times, open a new store or sponsor that Little League team.

Every new college graduate thought they'd have a good job by now, a place of their own, and that they could start paying back some of their loans and build for the future.

This is when our nation was supposed to start paying down the national debt and rolling back those massive deficits.

This was the hope and change America voted for.

It's not just what we wanted. It's not just what we expected.

It's what Americans deserved.

You deserved it because during these years, you worked harder than ever before. You deserved it because when it cost more to fill up your car, you cut out movie nights and put in longer hours. Or when you lost that job that paid $22.50 an hour with benefits, you took two jobs at nine bucks an hour and fewer benefits. You did it because your family depended on you. You did it because you're an American and you don't quit. You did it because it was what you had to do.

But driving home late from that second job, or standing there watching the gas pump hit $50 and still going, when the realtor told you that to sell your house you'd have to take a big loss, in those moments you knew that this just wasn't right.

But what could you do? Except work harder, do with less, try to stay optimistic. Hug your kids a little longer; maybe spend a little more time praying that tomorrow would be a better day.

I wish President Obama had succeeded because I want America to succeed. But his promises gave way to disappointment and division. This isn't something we have to accept. Now is the moment when we can do something. With your help we will do something.

Now is the moment when we can stand up and say, "I'm an American. I make my destiny. And we deserve better! My children deserve better! My family deserves better. My country deserves better!"

So here we stand. Americans have a choice. A decision.

To make that choice, you need to know more about me and about where I will lead our country.

I was born in the middle of the century in the middle of the country, a classic baby boomer. It was a time when Americans were returning from war and eager to work. To be an American was to assume that all things were possible. When President Kennedy challenged Americans to go to the moon, the question wasn't whether we'd get there, it was only when we'd get there.

The soles of Neil Armstrong's boots on the moon made permanent impressions on OUR souls and in our national psyche. Ann and I watched those steps together on her parent's sofa. Like all Americans we went to bed that night knowing we lived in the greatest country in the history of the world.

God bless Neil Armstrong.

Tonight that American flag is still there on the moon. And I don't doubt for a second that Neil Armstrong's spirit is still with us: that unique blend of optimism, humility and the utter confidence that when the world needs someone to do the really big stuff, you need an American.

That's how I was brought up.

My dad had been born in Mexico and his family had to leave during the Mexican revolution. I grew up with stories of his family being fed by the U.S. government as war refugees. My dad never made it through college and apprenticed as a lath and plaster carpenter. And he had big dreams. He convinced my mom, a beautiful young actress, to give up Hollywood to marry him. He moved to Detroit, led a great automobile company and became Governor of the Great State of Michigan.

We were Mormons and growing up in Michigan; that might have seemed unusual or out of place but I really don't remember it that way. My friends cared more about what sports teams we followed than what church we went to.

My mom and dad gave their kids the greatest gift of all? the gift of unconditional love. They cared deeply about who we would BE, and much less about what we would DO.

Unconditional love is a gift that Ann and I have tried to pass on to our sons and now to our grandchildren. All the laws and legislation in the world will never heal this world like the loving hearts and arms of mothers and fathers. If every child could drift to sleep feeling wrapped in the love of their family? and God's love? this world would be a far more gentle and better place.

Mom and dad were married 64 years. And if you wondered what their secret was, you could have asked the local florist? because every day Dad gave Mom a rose, which he put on her bedside table. That's how she found out what happened on the day my father died? she went looking for him because that morning, there was no rose.

My mom and dad were true partners, a life lesson that shaped me by everyday example. When my mom ran for the Senate, my dad was there for her every step of the way. I can still hear her saying in her beautiful voice, "Why should women have any less say than men, about the great decisions facing our nation?"

I wish she could have been here at the convention and heard leaders like Gov. Mary Fallin, Gov. Nikki Haley, Gov. Susana Martinez, Sen. Kelly Ayotte and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

As Governor of Massachusetts, I chose a woman Lt. Governor, a woman chief of staff, half of my cabinet and senior officials were women, and in business, I mentored and supported great women leaders who went on to run great companies.

I grew up in Detroit in love with cars and wanted to be a car guy, like my dad. But by the time I was out of school, I realized that I had to go out on my own, that if I stayed around Michigan in the same business, I'd never really know if I was getting a break because of my dad. I wanted to go someplace new and prove myself.

Those weren't the easiest of days? too many long hours and weekends working, five young sons who seemed to have this need to re-enact a different world war every night. But if you ask Ann and I what we'd give, to break up just one more fight between the boys, or wake up in the morning and discover a pile of kids asleep in our room. Well, every mom and dad knows the answer to that.

Those days were toughest on Ann, of course. She was heroic. Five boys, with our families a long way away. I had to travel a lot for my job then and I'd call and try to offer support. But every mom knows that doesn't help get the homework done or the kids out the door to school.

I knew that her job as a mom was harder than mine. And I knew without question, that her job as a mom was a lot more important than mine. And as America saw Tuesday night, Ann would have succeeded at anything she wanted to.

Like a lot of families in a new place with no family, we found kinship with a wide circle of friends through our church. When we were new to the community it was welcoming and as the years went by, it was a joy to help others who had just moved to town or just joined our church. We had remarkably vibrant and diverse congregants from all walks of life and many who were new to America. We prayed together, our kids played together and we always stood ready to help each other out in different ways.

And that's how it is in America. We look to our communities, our faiths, our families for our joy, our support, in good times and bad. It is both how we live our lives and why we live our lives. The strength and power and goodness of America has always been based on the strength and power and goodness of our communities, our families, our faiths.

That is the bedrock of what makes America, America. In our best days, we can feel the vibrancy of America's communities, large and small.

It's when we see that new business opening up downtown. It's when we go to work in the morning and see everybody else on our block doing the same.

It's when our son or daughter calls from college to talk about which job offer they should take..and you try not to choke up when you hear that the one they like is not far from home.

It's that good feeling when you have more time to volunteer to coach your kid's soccer team, or help out on school trips.

But for too many Americans, these good days are harder to come by. How many days have you woken up feeling that something really special was happening in America?

Many of you felt that way on Election Day four years ago. Hope and change had a powerful appeal. But tonight I'd ask a simple question: If you felt that excitement when you voted for Barack Obama, shouldn't you feel that way now that he's President Obama? You know there's something wrong with the kind of job he's done as president when the best feeling you had was the day you voted for him.

The president hasn't disappointed you because he wanted to. The president has disappointed America because he hasn't led America in the right direction. He took office without the basic qualification that most Americans have and one that was essential to his task. He had almost no experience working in a business. Jobs to him are about government.

I learned the real lessons about how America works from experience.

When I was 37, I helped start a small company. My partners and I had been working for a company that was in the business of helping other businesses.

So some of us had this idea that if we really believed our advice was helping companies, we should invest in companies. We should bet on ourselves and on our advice.

So we started a new business called Bain Capital. The only problem was, while we believed in ourselves, nobody else did. We were young and had never done this before and we almost didn't get off the ground. In those days, sometimes I wondered if I had made a really big mistake. I had thought about asking my church's pension fund to invest, but I didn't. I figured it was bad enough that I might lose my investors' money, but I didn't want to go to hell too. Shows what I know. Another of my partners got the Episcopal Church pension fund to invest. Today there are a lot of happy retired priests who should thank him.

That business we started with 10 people has now grown into a great American success story. Some of the companies we helped start are names you know. An office supply company called Staples - where I'm pleased to see the Obama campaign has been shopping; The Sports Authority, which became a favorite of my sons. We started an early childhood learning center called Bright Horizons that First Lady Michelle Obama rightly praised. At a time when nobody thought we'd ever see a new steel mill built in America, we took a chance and built one in a corn field in Indiana. Today Steel Dynamics is one of the largest steel producers in the United States.

These are American success stories. And yet the centerpiece of the President's entire re-election campaign is attacking success. Is it any wonder that someone who attacks success has led the worst economic recovery since the Great Depression? In America, we celebrate success, we don't apologize for it.

We weren't always successful at Bain. But no one ever is in the real world of business.

That's what this President doesn't seem to understand. Business and growing jobs is about taking risk, sometimes failing, sometimes succeeding, but always striving. It is about dreams. Usually, it doesn't work out exactly as you might have imagined. Steve Jobs was fired at Apple. He came back and changed the world.

It's the genius of the American free enterprise system? to harness the extraordinary creativity and talent and industry of the American people with a system that is dedicated to creating tomorrow's prosperity rather than trying to redistribute today's.

That is why every president since the Great Depression who came before the American people asking for a second term could look back at the last four years and say with satisfaction: "you are better off today than you were four years ago."

Except Jimmy Carter. And except this president.

This president can ask us to be patient.

This president can tell us it was someone else's fault.

This president can tell us that the next four years he'll get it right.

But this president cannot tell us that you are better off today than when he took office.

America has been patient. Americans have supported this president in good faith.

But today, the time has come to turn the page.

Today the time has come for us to put the disappointments of the last four years behind us.

To put aside the divisiveness and the recriminations.

To forget about what might have been and to look ahead to what can be.

Now is the time to restore the promise of America. Many Americans have given up on this president but they haven't ever thought about giving up. Not on themselves. Not on each other. And not on America.

What is needed in our country today is not complicated or profound. It doesn't take a special government commission to tell us what America needs.

What America needs is jobs.

Lots of jobs.

In the richest country in the history of the world, this Obama economy has crushed the middle class. Family income has fallen by $4,000, but health insurance premiums are higher, food prices are higher, utility bills are higher, and gasoline prices have doubled. Today more Americans wake up in poverty than ever before. Nearly one out of six Americans is living in poverty. Look around you. These are not strangers. These are our brothers and sisters, our fellow Americans.

His policies have not helped create jobs, they have depressed them. And this I can tell you about where President Obama would take America:

His plan to raise taxes on small business won't add jobs, it will eliminate them;

His assault on coal and gas and oil will send energy and manufacturing jobs to China;

His trillion dollar cuts to our military will eliminate hundreds of thousands of jobs, and also put our security at greater risk;

His $716 billion cut to Medicare to finance Obamacare will both hurt today's seniors, and depress innovation? and jobs? in medicine.

And his trillion-dollar deficits will slow our economy, restrain employment, and cause wages to stall.

To the majority of Americans who now believe that the future will not be better than the past, I can guarantee you this: if Barack Obama is re-elected, you will be right.

I am running for president to help create a better future. A future where everyone who wants a job can find one. Where no senior fears for the security of their retirement. An America where every parent knows that their child will get an education that leads them to a good job and a bright horizon.

And unlike the President, I have a plan to create 12 million new jobs. It has five steps.

First, by 2020, North America will be energy independent by taking full advantage of our oil and coal and gas and nuclear and renewables.

Second, we will give our fellow citizens the skills they need for the jobs of today and the careers of tomorrow. When it comes to the school your child will attend, every parent should have a choice, and every child should have a chance.

Third, we will make trade work for America by forging new trade agreements. And when nations cheat in trade, there will be unmistakable consequences.

Fourth, to assure every entrepreneur and every job creator that their investments in America will not vanish as have those in Greece, we will cut the deficit and put America on track to a balanced budget.

And fifth, we will champion small businesses, America's engine of job growth. That means reducing taxes on business, not raising them. It means simplifying and modernizing the regulations that hurt small business the most. And it means that we must rein in the skyrocketing cost of healthcare by repealing and replacing Obamacare.

Today, women are more likely than men to start a business. They need a president who respects and understands what they do.

And let me make this very clear? unlike President Obama, I will not raise taxes on the middle class.

As president, I will protect the sanctity of life. I will honor the institution of marriage. And I will guarantee America's first liberty: the freedom of religion.

President Obama promised to begin to slow the rise of the oceans and heal the planet. My promise...is to help you and your family.

I will begin my presidency with a jobs tour. President Obama began with an apology tour. America, he said, had dictated to other nations. No Mr. President, America has freed other nations from dictators.

Every American was relieved the day President Obama gave the order, and Seal Team Six took out Osama bin Laden. But on another front, every American is less secure today because he has failed to slow Iran's nuclear threat.

In his first TV interview as president, he said we should talk to Iran. We're still talking, and Iran's centrifuges are still spinning.

President Obama has thrown allies like Israel under the bus, even as he has relaxed sanctions on Castro's Cuba. He abandoned our friends in Poland by walking away from our missile defense commitments, but is eager to give Russia's President Putin the flexibility he desires, after the election. Under my administration, our friends will see more loyalty, and Mr. Putin will see a little less flexibility and more backbone.

We will honor America's democratic ideals because a free world is a more peaceful world. This is the bipartisan foreign policy legacy of Truman and Reagan. And under my presidency we will return to it once again.

You might have asked yourself if these last years are really the America we want, the America won for us by the greatest generation.

Does the America we want borrow a trillion dollars from China? No.

Does it fail to find the jobs that are needed for 23 million people and for half the kids graduating from college? No.

Are its schools lagging behind the rest of the developed world? No.

And does the America we want succumb to resentment and division? We know the answer.

The America we all know has been a story of the many becoming one, uniting to preserve liberty, uniting to build the greatest economy in the world, uniting to save the world from unspeakable darkness.

Everywhere I go in America, there are monuments that list those who have given their lives for America. There is no mention of their race, their party affiliation, or what they did for a living. They lived and died under a single flag, fighting for a single purpose. They pledged allegiance to the United States of America.

That America, that united America, can unleash an economy that will put Americans back to work, that will once again lead the world with innovation and productivity, and that will restore every father and mother's confidence that their children's future is brighter even than the past.

That America, that united America, will preserve a military that is so strong, no nation would ever dare to test it.

That America, that united America, will uphold the constellation of rights that were endowed by our creator, and codified in our Constitution.

That united America will care for the poor and the sick, will honor and respect the elderly, and will give a helping hand to those in need.

That America is the best within each of us. That America we want for our children.

If I am elected President of these United States, I will work with all my energy and soul to restore that America, to lift our eyes to a better future. That future is our destiny. That future is out there. It is waiting for us. Our children deserve it, our nation depends upon it, the peace and freedom of the world require it. And with your help we will deliver it. Let us begin that future together tonight.

Pentagon Threatens Ex-Navy SEAL with Legal Action

August 31, 2012

The Pentagon "threatened legal action against the former member of the Navy SEALs who has written a first-person account of the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, but the author's lawyer and the book's publisher, Penguin, said they were proceeding with publication on Sept. 4," the New York Times reports.

A spokesman said that the book's author, Matt Bissonnette, was "in material breach of nondisclosure agreements he signed with the U.S. government" to not reveal classified information.

If you want to read the book, you might want to get your order in quickly.

Feuding Russian tycoons face London court ruling

LONDON (AP) ? A judge is due to rule on a multi-billion-dollar legal battle waged between two Russian tycoons in a London courtroom.

Judge Elizabeth Gloster is expected to deliver a summary ruling Friday to settle the feud between 45-year-old Roman Abramovich, the billionaire Chelsea Football Club owner, and the 66-year-old self-exiled tycoon Boris Berezovsky.

Berezovsky, a former Kremlin power broker, alleges that Abramovich, who he called his protege, betrayed and intimidated him into selling his stakes in the Russian oil company Sibneft vastly beneath their value.

Berezovsky alleged blackmail and breach of contract, and is seeking more than 3 billion pounds ($4.8 billion) in damages. Abramovich denies the allegations.

Gloster has reserved judgment since the trial, the most high-profile commercial case at London's High Court in recent years, ended in January.

Videogames, more than entertainment. | Digital meets Culture

Interesting studies on how videogames are improving Americans? society are conducted by ESA, an association in the videogames industry.

The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) is the U.S. association exclusively dedicated to serving the business and public affairs needs of companies that publish computer and video games for video game consoles, personal computers, and the Internet.

The association provides a very valuable and continuous research on the impact of videogames on several aspects in the society. Although being U.S. focused, their studies are extremely interesting, on how games are improving family life, art, education, economy, social issues and much more.

Videogames are not a kids? interest, as the ESA report informs about the average age of gamers: 30 years old! Statistics say that almost 40% of gamers is +36 years old, and 47% of the whole gamers? population is represented by women.

Americans like videogames and they also believe in the educational impact of videogames, both in the family life (60% parents play with their children at least monthly, because it is fun and it is a good opportunity to socialize) and as a teaching device.

In addition to being a great way to keep students engaged, researchers have found that video games have real potential as next-generation learning tools, that help impart knowledge, develop life skills and reinforce positive habits in students of all ages.

The educational benefits of video games are extending into higher education. Ludology, scholastic video game study from a humanistic perspective, now qualifies students to pursue careers in computer and video game design and programming. Educational institutions across the nation provide young people with advanced artistic training in computer and video game design. 343 American colleges, universities and technical schools, including New York University, the Art Institute of Seattle and Marist College, will offer programs and courses in video game design, development and programming.

Moreover, the impact of videogames on art and graphic design is indeed an undeniable fact: the artwork in computer and videogames has become a respected artistic genre of its own. Galleries now feature game artwork in a number of exhibits, and entertainment software serves as a new medium for emerging artists.

Research Shows Replacement Windows Are A Solid Investment ...

If you truly want a more energy efficient home, you need to get rid of your old, leaky windows.

Many homeowners put off new windows because they think they can increase their energy efficiency by caulking their old, drafty windows. Caulking will definitely help, but if you have old, inefficient windows you are going to need to replace them with new Energy Star ones. You will save so much money on your energy bills, your new windows will eventually pay for themselves. Aside from saving energy, replacement windows also add curb appeal to your home. Local realtors say, the shape of the windows can single handedly make or break the sale of a home.

?Remodeling? magazine examined the cost of replacement windows in an average-sized home, and then figured that house?s value if sold a year later. The average rate of the window replacement cost recouped was 91.6%, which means that even if you move, you will gain value from your choice to replace your windows. New windows provide one of the best returns on investment (ROI) of any home improvement project.

Alliance Windows of Asheville, NC will help you choose the right windows for you. Many of our customers are so happy with their windows, they say it was the best investment they?ve ever made!

RNC faithful unfazed by Isaac?s stormy weather

TAMPA, Fla. ? With Tropical Storm Isaac brewing in the Gulf of Mexico, the Republican National Convention schedule was truncated to the extreme Monday. RNC Chair Reince Priebus gaveled in and out a ten-minute session, and hosts cancelled and delayed many events surrounding the convention.

Isaac did not directly hit Tampa Monday; by Monday afternoon it amounted to scattered showers ? at times heavy ? and a bit of wind. The sun came out sporadically around the convention center.

Yet convention delegates on the floor who spoke with The Daily Caller explained that unofficially delaying the convention?s starting gun?was the right thing to do. (RELATED:?RNC unveils national debt clock, immediately recesses)

Hawaii?delegate Jamie Shidel told TheDC that while his plans did not change much, the Hawaii delegation did stockpile some water, just in case.

?Better to be careful than take the risk of business as usual,? he said, noting that he is ?confident? that the GOP has a chance to take Obama?s home state of Hawaii.

John Bates, an Oklahoma delegate, stressed the uncertainty of the schedule and took notice of all the people milling about the convention floor.

?I understand why they did what they did,? Bates said, referring to the delay, ?because if you miss it, there is no way to be right. I mean, even if you are right you?re wrong because it is a Hurricane.?

Michael Coleman, a Maine delegate, told TheDC that his plans have not changed. He?s both pleased the storm?s center missed Tampa and concerned Isaac?s path could spell trouble elsewhere.

?Its a little windy, a little more windy than we?re used to up in Maine,? he said, but not too bad overall.

Kentucky delegate Kevin Smith said things have been going smoothly for his delegation despite the rain.

?We are really looking forward to the speakers,? he said, adding that he appreciated the safety-first focus.

Tina Dupont of Michigan, an alternate delegate, told TheDC that the delay gave her a chance to see more of the convention venue.

?They have moved so many things, like today this would have been going on and its not. And maybe it is good for us because as an alternate I can be down here on the floor,? she said.

?I won?t probably get much of an opportunity. So in a way maybe it?s been good for me but not for the overall event.?

Jim Ayala, a Nevada delegate and Ron Paul supporter, noted the sizable turnout for the quick-gavel event despite Isaac?s shadow looming large.

?The weather doesn?t really seem to be affecting anything at all,? he said. ?We were told by some ?official sources? that this event wasn?t even going to happen today. And look how many people there are.?

?Better safe than sorry.?

New 54.5 mpg rule 'will change way industry operates"

AP

Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne says muscle cars such as the Hemi-V8-powered Dodge Challenger will become "as rare as white flies."

By Paul A. Eisenstein, NBC News contributor

?After an unexpected delay, the White House has finalized the biggest jump in the Corporate Average Fuel Economy, or CAFE, standard since the government first set mileage guidelines in 1978.

As part of a broad compromise hammered out between the auto industry, environmental groups and government regulators, the fuel economy of the typical car, truck or crossover will nearly double between now and 2025, to an average 54.5 miles per gallon. That?s a more than 50 percent?jump, meanwhile, from the CAFE rules the Obama rules had previously approved for 2016.

?These fuel standards represent the single most important step we?ve ever taken to reduce our dependence on foreign oil,? Obama declared, while also cutting CO2 emissions by an estimated 50 percent.

But far less certain is the impact the new rules will have on the auto industry and on the motorists of 2025.? Naysayers have warned that, at 54.5 mpg, tomorrow?s cars will be smaller, largely battery-based and significantly more expensive.? Proponents of the CAFE increase dismiss such forecasts as fear-mongering and insist things will change less than people anticipate.

For his part, Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne believes the industry will be able to make the new target ? even though the rules do provide a mid-term analysis to ensure things remain on track.? A future administration could roll the numbers back if there?s trouble.

But Marchionne insisted, the new rules ?will change the way this industry operates,? adding his belief that, at 54.5 mpg, it will be difficult to continue producing high-performance vehicles such as the Hemi-V8-powered Dodge Challenger.? Such muscle cars, the executive warned, will become ?as rare as white flies.?

Maybe we?ll discover more white flies, countered analyst Jim Hall, of 2953 Analytics.? The industry veteran points out that automakers have been predicting the death of the V-8 since the first CAFE rules went into effect for the 1979 model-year.? Yet, he adds, today?s motorists can buy some of the most powerful automobiles ever produced, including the 1100-horsepower Bugatti Veyron and 600-horsepower versions of the Chevrolet Corvette and Ford Mustang.

The cars on the road by 2025 ?will change less than anybody imagines ? but more than anyone wants,? Hall suggested, explaining that, just as the industry has done every time new mileage rules have been passed, ?They will find a lot of new ways to do things.?

A great example is Chrysler?s new Dodge Dart. The compact sedan makes use of a new turbocharged four-cylinder engine, underbody panels and other aerodynamic improvements, and an advanced 6-speed transmission to boost fuel economy. And Chrysler will roll out a 9-speed automatic next year.?

Improved transmissions can add as much as 5 to 10% better mileage, industry engineers note, and are going into widespread use already. So is stop/start technology that automatically shuts off an engine instead of idling. The engine quickly restarts when the driver?s food lifts off the gas. On the upcoming Honda Accord that could boost mileage by 3% or more.?

A study by automotive supplier Ricardo, Inc., suggests a number of other likely steps makers will take to meet the new rules, such as:

  • A total systems approach to optimize not just the powertrain, but the complete vehicle;
  • A wide array of new powertrain architecture and design solutions;
  • Significant downsizing combined with enhanced boost systems;
  • Greater use of lightweight materials along with new approaches to mass optimization.

General Motors recently invested in a start-up firm developing a way to produce significantly stronger, but notably lighter, steel.? BMW, meanwhile, has invested heavily in firms working to drive down the cost of producing ultra-light carbon fiber, a material widely used in supercars like the Veyron, and in Formula One race cars.

The real question is how much the industry will have to turn towards electrification.? Nearly every major maker now offers at least one hybrid-electric vehicle.? Toyota has promised to add a hybrid option to virtually all its models in the next few years. ?Ford?s new hybrid micro-van, the 2013 C-Max, will be able to get 47 miles per gallon in the combined city/highway test cycle.

A more advanced, plug-in hybrid version, the C-Max Energi, should get significantly better numbers when it comes out next year, the maker hints.? Most makers are also working on plug-ins or going all the way to battery-electric vehicles, such as the Nissan Leaf, with such products getting EPA ratings that approach 100 mpg-e, the ?e? standing for equivalent, the government using a complex formula to estimate how much battery power is equal to a gallon of gas.

Ironically, it?s the State of California, rather than Washington, that is actually driving the sudden rush to battery cars.? The powerful California Air Resources Board has set its own rules requiring a minimum number of so-called Zero-Emission Vehicles from all major automakers.? Those guidelines have been copied by a number of other states.

One reason why it?s unclear how much things might change by 2025 is that the new mileage rules are, to some degree, a figment.? The government operates two sets of books, in effect.? One is based on raw test data.? The other has been revised to reflect what vehicles will get in real-world conditions.? By that measure, expect passenger cars to average 45 mpg by 2025, light trucks 32.?

The other big uncertainty is cost.? GOP Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney has hoisted the banner of critics, some suggesting the new CAF? rules will result in price increases of up to $10,000 per vehicle ? as projected by Michigan Center for Automotive Research.? Skeptics have also warned the result will be lower car sales and fewer American jobs.

?Cars will get more expensive, that?s a given,? said analyst Hall, but like most observers he thinks the figure won?t be nearly as great.

Other studies, such as one from the Boston Consulting Group, put the increase at barely $2,000 to $3,000.? The government?s number is $2,800.? And regulators forecast motorists will save anywhere from $5,700 to $7,400 in gas during the life of those future vehicles.? That?s based on a gallon costing just $3.87.? Most energy experts predict fuel will rise to $5, even $6 or more a gallon before this decade ends, so the savings from the extra mileage could be substantially more.

Thousands rally for Dos Santos in campaign carnival

With President Jose Eduardo dos Santos's face plastered on jumbo screens, T-shirts and helium blimps, thousands of Angolans rallied Wednesday in the final campaign show of one of Africa's most powerful rulers.

Supporters came in buses, mini-vans and a fleet of luxury SUVs to Angola's biggest stadium, on the outskirts of Luanda, an area being transformed into a "new city" by a staggering landscape of mainly Chinese construction projects.

With speakers blaring jingles in support of the ruling MPLA, the crowd danced to lyrics like "The MPLA is our party" and "It's for all Angolans, the MPLA."

The People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) has dominated politics in the country since independence from Portugal in 1975. Its leader, Dos Santos has had a grip on power in the oil rich nation for 33 years.

At the rally, a stage festooned with balloons in the party colours of red, yellow and black rose outside the stadium, flanked by jumbo screens showing Dos Santos's face alongside a party flag. In the rear of the crowd, his face beamed from a two-storey banner.

And in the crowd, the party wasted no opportunity to brand itself and the president's portrait on headscarves, baseball caps, T-shirts, cowboy hats, umbrellas and skirts.

"We want Jose Eduardo dos Santos to win," said Fernando Bumba. The 49-year-old said he had voted for the MPLA in the 2008 elections, when the party took more than 80 percent of the vote in the country's first peacetime polls.

"The MPLA has built stadiums, schools and clinics. This party can help the poor," he said.

The rally was designed like a well-organised street fair. The Organisation of Angolan Women was given prime spots in front of the stage, cheering "Viva!" and dancing to party songs.

Men and young boys were grouped by regions in the rear, separated by ropes with sections clearly labeled. Along the edges rose a thriving market of barbecues and fresh fruits.

Through the crowd volunteers passed out water and juice, and of course large photographs of Dos Santos.

"This party cares about the future of young people," said 19-year-old Silvio Cuanzanga Zua, a computer science student wearing a Dos Santos T-shirt and cap.

He praised Dos Santos for improvements to his family's neighbourhood.

"Now we have water at my house," he said.

Not that life is easy. He lives with his parents and six siblings in a three-bedroom home. Some of his brothers work as taxi drivers, but he believes he'll be able to find a better job.

The lavishly orchestrated rally took place within sight of the "new city" of Kilamba Kaixi, a sprawling Chinese-built complex developed to house tens of thousands of families in one of the government's showcase projects to ease Luanda's crushing housing shortage.

But one year after the first phase was completed, the city remains largely empty -- a sign of both Angola's heady ambitions and its difficulty in following through on its projects.

At the rally, few cared about the government's shortfalls.

In power since 1979, Dos Santos claims credit for ending the country's 27-year civil war and for the economic boom of the last decade, when Angola, Africa's second-largest oil producer, emerged as one of the world's fastest-growing economies.

The opposition in Angola is generally fragmented while civil society is weak, enabling the MPLA to keep a tight hold on power.

One 57-year-old retired teacher, who declined to be named, said she'd supported the MPLA all her life, because it's "the party of peace".

She blamed Unita, the former rebel group that is now the main opposition, for dragging out the war.

"During the war, we couldn't do anything. Now we can do whatever we want," she said. "The most important thing is peace."

PTI announces its economic reforms plan | Pakistan Today | Latest ...

ISLAMABAD?-?The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Friday announced its economic plan in which it claimed to bringing reforms in governance, with priority to education and health sector.

PTI Senior Vice President Asad Umar presented the Economic Policy in a seminar titled Economic Policy Vision. PTI Chairman Imran Khan and other senior party leaders were also present.

The PTI leaders castigated the federal and provincial governments over what they said misplaced priorities, incompetence and greed.

?No effort has been made in the last five years to address the basic problems being faced by the citizens including the highest-ever sustained inflation, no jobs, a crippling energy crisis and deteriorating law and order. The failure of the state to look after its citizens comes at a very high price, with key human development and welfare indicators for Pakistan being worse then some of the poorest Sub-Saharan African states and lagging behind other countries in South Asia,? says a press statement issued by PTI at the end of seminar.

The PTI claimed that its reforms program would not only rescue the crumbling state but also meet the aspirations of the citizens, in particular the youth, for a sovereign welfare state.

Education reforms include one modern education system for all Pakistanis, increase in education spending five folds to Rs 2,195 billion by 2018 to achieve 80 percent enrollment. According to the PTI policy, it would focus on girls? education by doubling the number of schools.

The party claimed that it would introduce a free health care system for the poor. Spending on health would be increased five folds to Rs 1,142 billion by 2018.

Energy reforms focus on reducing cost of producing electricity from indigenous resources. This will resolve the circular debt and make Pakistan an energy secure state. The details have already been announced through the energy plan announced earlier

The major expenditure reform would include shutting down the Prime Minister House, the Chief Minister?s and the Governor?s House.

The budget of the Presidency would be slashed by 50 percent and the ministries would be reduced to 17 from 37.

Free and subsidized plots would be abolished. All state departments including military would have to reduce spending and release funds for the welfare of the citizens. According to the plan, the PTI would convert lavish government-owned building into educational institutions.

All income groups would be taxed regardless of source and a just and equitable tax system would be put in place, a minimum asset tax adjustable against income already paid would be imposed.

Tax reforms also include ending ?soft? amnesty schemes. Provincial governments must take responsibility, collect property and agriculture tax from the large landholders. Revamp FBR and make it autonomous insulated from political pressures. Reforms will increase tax revenue to 15% of GDP in 2018 from 9.9 percent in 2012.

The party planned to carry out deep reforms that would make state institutions empowered, accountable and transparent. It planned to devolve power from the central and provincial capitals and empower local communities at the grass roots level. Special Task Force to recover looted national wealth stashed outside the country. All recovered assets of corruption will be used for educating the youth of Pakistan.

According to the PTI plan, the Railway Ministry, which had been facing losses of billions of rupees, would be abolished and the Railway would work under an autonomous board. While, the Pakistan International Airlines would also be taken out of the control of Ministry of Defence.

PCB orders probe into Pakistan?s U-19 World Cup failure ? Cricket News Update

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has ordered a report from the Under-19 team?s manager and coach to explain the reasons behind the team?s recent ouster from the ongoing ICC Under-19 World Cup 2012.

Fresh from a 2-1 victory in a Youth ODI Series played in Australia in July/August this year, the Pakistan U-19 team went into the WorldT20 with high hopes, and expectations. However, they were unable to make it to the tournament semi-finals ? a defeat which PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf admitted had been fairly disappointing.

?... yes definitely the team went with great expectations but the results didn't match those expectations,? said Ashraf. ?When the team returns we will seek reports from the management and try to find out what went wrong.?

Another source close to the board confirmed that the team coach?s habit of regularly posting team pictures and updates on Facebook had been noted by the board, which was concerned this activity may have distracted him from his coaching responsibilities.

?The question is that if a coach is busy focusing on uploading the activities of the team on a social networking site, does it affect his commitment to the team preparations,? said the source.

The Pakistan U-19s got off to a flying start in the tournament, and their performances appeared promising in the initial stages of the tournament. They secured a comprehensive 109-run victory against the Afghanistan U-19s in the tournament opener, featuring stellar performances by skipper Babar Azam and bowler Zia-ul-Haq.

The second match, played against the Scotland U-19s at Buderim on August 13, saw the Pakistan U-19s triumphant once again, securing a 9-wicket win with 82 deliveries remaining. The final Group B match, against the New Zealand U-19s, also resulted in a victory for the Pakistan U-19s ? a 5-wicket win with 112 deliveries remaining.

However, the team failed to continue the momentum during their quarter-final against their arch-rivals, the India U-19s, who bested Azam?s men in a narrow 1-wicket victory, with 12 balls remaining. Following their failure to make it to the semis, the Pakistan U-19s were also unable to win either their 5th place play-off semi-final against the West Indies U-19s, or their 7th place play-off against the Bangladesh U-19s.

Windows 8 x64 Driver Solution

Hi All

I happen to have a Dell Precision M4600.? I have Windows 8 now since I am a MSDN subscriber.?

Note:? not all Dell laptops will be able to upgrade to Windows 8 and if you are not sure contact a Dell representative (I do not work for Dell) before you attempt to go to Windows 8.?Also, even though I have a solution, that fact does NOT mean that Dell is currently supporting Windows 8 for my laptop model, and I proceed at my own risk.? I decided to take this risk because I believe there are good similarities between Windows 7 and Windows 8.

?

I had followed the download for Windows 7 x64 to get drivers which would work with Windows 8.? All the drivers I downloaded (plus the BIOS update) worked fine.? The Network-related drivers (including Broadcom UDM and the wireless network) did not work for me.

What did work is a solution I found on another thread.? However, I decided to start a new thread so that people going to Windows 8 will go directly to a solution.

For me (the Dell Precision M4600) the solution was:

  • Go to the "Drivers and Downloads" area for my computer
  • Choose "All FIles for (your computer name -- mine is Dell Precision M4600)"
  • Choose "Windows?7 x64" as the operating system (if your computer is older and does not have this choice, then pick the most recent?Windows?operating system -- or contact technical support to see if you can go?to Windows?8)?
  • Under "Systems Management" you should see more than one file
  • Choose the latest "Driver Pack", which is in CAB format (for my laptop model)
  • My file was large (over 1 GB) to download, so it took time even on DSL
  • I then extracted the files using the free 7-zip software

Then, I went to "Device Manager" (under "Computer", then right-click for "Properties) -- I know for sure that some devices had no driver because they had a yellow exclamation point.? I chose to update the driver, then pointed to the directory where the extracted driver files were.? I also chose the check box to look for subdirectories.?

Going one at a time, the four disconnected devices all found a driver (those devices included all the network-related?drivers).? Even one new device popped up during the driver installation, so I attached that one to a driver too.?

I have decided to keep this CAB file in case I need it -- though as is always true, Dell may update those files in the future, and my copy is only for a backup in case of a disaster (keep drivers that you know will work for sure if you have to replace your hard drive).

Hope this guidance helps -- again, I do not work for Dell, and if you have specific questions about another laptop, please contact Dell technical support.

?

The Detrimental Influence of Hail on Your Rooftop and How to ...

Due to its major task to safeguard the house from the cruel effect of the climatic elements, the roof structure is constantly exposed to elements like radiation, rain, snow, and hail. You can think of them as footmen at an army's front line; taking the impact of the attacks to secure the king, which is you, the homeowner. But like all honorable horsemen, the roof's shield can only stand up to so damage and will inevitably wear away, making your home susceptible to harm.

Hail is the roof covering's greatest nemesis. In fact, hail damage accounts for more than $ 1.6 billion in roof damage per year in the country according to studies by the Federal Alliance of Safe Homes. What makes hail frightening is the fact it can go undetected for a period of time until the roofing system is all but destroyed. It is advised to conduct immediate roof evaluations after a hailstorm to identify possible damages.

Hail damage varies according to the wind direction, storm duration, and hailstone size. Hail stones can go from pea size to the size of a golf ball. Golf ball-size hail stones are the most damaging ones since they can make holes and/or seriously damage shingles. If your roof structure has suffered damage beyond your ability and DIY know-how, it is smart to obtain the assistance of a proficient roofing contractor.

Watchfulness is virtually a requirement for residents of cities like Murfreesboro, Chattanooga, and Huntsville. Because these spots don't encounter much hail, many homeowners are likely to become serene, trusting that their rooftops are barely likely to be harmed by hail. Actually, serious hail damage can take place even in a single night. Be sure to include Chattanooga roofers in your phonebook in the event hailstorms happen.

Seeking a reputable Huntsville roofer can be fairly a tough process. Roofing contractors are not all the same, and can differ in levels of customer service, skill, and fees. Never opt for a roofer mainly because of the smaller fees charged since cheapness is frequently accompanied by second-rate know-how.

Roof coverings are duty-bound for keeping residents safe, while the homeowners are responsible for keeping their rooftops well-maintained. This kind of an alliance, however, requires occasional guidance from a veteran Murfreesboro roofer for professional solutions. Visit to CRoberts.com for extensive data on hail damage to roofing shingles.

For more details, search Chattanooga roofers, Huntsville roofer, and Murfreesboro roofer in Google for related information.
