Risk factors affect the incidence of childhood pneumonia in modern urban apartment?

Childhood pneumonia is the leading causes of death among children in China and worldwide. Using coal or wood as cooking fuel in rural area was considered as major cause of Pneumonia. However, the incidence of childhood pneumonia is still high in urban modern cities. Which home risk factors affect the incidence of childhood pneumonia in modern urban apartment? Professor Hua QIAN and his group from School of Energy and Environment, Southeast University set out to research this problem. A recent study found that the risk factors in indoor environment typical of modern apartments in China related to pneumonia among children. Their work, entitled "Home risk factors for childhood pneumonia in Nanjing, China", was published in CHINESE SCIENCE Bulletin.2013, Vol 58.

The study is part of the China, Child, Home, and Health (CCHH) project, which is investigating associations between home indoor environmental factors and children's health. This is a population-based cross-sectional study. The survey was performed and completed from December 2010 to March 2011 in Nanjing. Twenty-three kindergartens were randomly selected in the 11 districts. No kindergartens were selected in the 2 counties. Total 6461 questionnaires were distributed and 4014 properly filled-out questionnaires were returned, giving a response rate of 65.7%. The response rate was 61.8%, 68.4% and 82.0% for kindergartens in urban, suburban, and industrial areas respectively.

Statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS for Windows. Binary logistic models were used to test associations between home environmental exposure, building characteristics, life style and the risk of pneumonia infections. For those factors that reached significance in binary analysis, a multivariate logistic model was applied to calculate adjusted odds ratios for pneumonia infections. Step forward elimination techniques were used in the multivariate logistic regression model.

This study investigated the association between childhood pneumonia and indoor environment factors in modern homes. The pneumonia incidence is found to be high in Nanjing. Lack of ventilation, gas as cooking fuel, dampness, new furniture, "modern" floor and wall covering materials showed significant associations with the incidence of pneumonia. Other factors such as family allergy, child care by non-parents, other respiratory diseases were also reported to be associated with pneumonia. In summary, modern life style and home environment play an important role in developing pneumonia infections among children in Nanjing.

Stones play long-awaited Glastonbury gig

PILTON, England (AP) ? There's a first time for everything, even if you're the Rolling Stones.

The rock rabble-rousers who formed half a century ago played Britain's Glastonbury Festival on Saturday, their debut appearance at the country's most prestigious rock music event.

A majority of the 135,000 festival ticket-holders crammed into the fields in front of Glastonbury's Pyramid Stage for the gig, which opened with a rousing "Jumpin' Jack Flash."

As on recent tour dates, the Stones gave fans a fistful of classic hits ? including "It's Only Rock 'n' Roll (But I Like It)," ''Paint it Black," ''Wild Horses" and "Gimme Shelter" ? as well as newer songs.

There was even a brand-new folky number called "Glastonbury Girl," written specially for the occasion.

Singer Mick Jagger, who turns 70 in July, has lost none of his swagger, strutting the stage in a sequined green jacket, a satin-lined black cape ? on "Sympathy For the Devil" ? and other eye-catching outfits.

He thanked fans who had followed the band for five decades, and told newcomers, "do come again," before giving the crowd what it had been waiting for ? an encore of "Satisfaction."

In a pre-show BBC radio interview, Jagger gave no clue about whether the band he started with Keith Richards in 1962 will ever call it quits. He said, "I've no idea," before telling an interviewer that he'd probably continue as long as he was wanted.

The band recently played a string of North American dates on its "50 and Counting" tour and is due to play two concerts in London's Hyde Park next month.

The Stones turned down offers to play Glastonbury for years, but appeared to embrace the down-to-earth spirit of the festival, held on a farm in southwest England. On Saturday, Jagger tweeted a picture of himself outside a yurt, a Mongolian-style felt tent where he reportedly spent the night.

And he told the crowd he had been to see Friday night's headliners, Arctic Monkeys.

Guitarist Richards said ahead of the show that the band was "destined to play Glastonbury."

"I look upon it as a culmination of our British heritage really," he said. "It had to be done."

The Glastonbury Festival was founded by Michael Eavis in 1970 on his Worthy Farm near Pilton, 120 miles (193 kilometers) southwest of London. It is famous for its eclectic lineup ? and the mud that overwhelms the site in rainy years.

Other performers on Saturday included Elvis Costello and Primal Scream. But for many festivalgoers, the Stones were the main event.

The three-day festival wraps up Sunday with a headlining set from Britain's Mumford & Sons.

This image, made by and commemorating NASA's Galaxy Evolution Explorer that was shut down this week after 10 years of faithful and gainful service, shows NGC 6744, one of the galaxies most similar to our Milky Way in the local universe. This ultraviolet view highlights the vast extent of the fluffy spiral arms, and demonstrates that star formation can occur in the outer regions of galaxies. The galaxy is situated in the constellation of Pavo at a distance of about 30 million light-years.

NGC 6744 is bigger than the Milky Way, with a disk stretching 175,000 light-years across. A small, distorted companion galaxy is located nearby, which is similar to our galaxy's Large Magellanic Cloud. This companion, called NGC 6744A, can be seen as a blob in the main galaxy's outer arm, at upper right. -- NASA

NGC 6744 is bigger than the Milky Way, with a disk stretching 175,000 light-years across. A small, distorted companion galaxy is located nearby, which is similar to our galaxy's Large Magellanic Cloud.

Exclusive: Fearing death, Congo's 'Terminator' fled with help of family

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Facing defeat by a rival rebel and fearing death at the hands of Rwandan troops, Congolese warlord Bosco Ntaganda quietly slipped into Rwanda on a small path with a single escort to turn himself in at the U.S. Embassy in Kigali, according to a U.N. report.

Details of the March 18 surrender of Ntaganda, who evaded arrest on international war crimes charges for seven years, were contained in the confidential interim report by the U.N. Group of Experts to the Security Council's Congo sanctions committee. The report was seen by Reuters on Friday.

Ntaganda, a Rwandan-born Tutsi rebel known as "the Terminator," is accused of murder, rape, sexual slavery and recruiting child soldiers during 15 years of rebellion in resource-rich eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

It was not known how Ntaganda made his way from eastern Congo to the Rwandan capital, where he had simply walked into the U.S. Embassy and asked diplomats to transfer him to the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

The U.N. experts said his secret three-day journey followed after a violent split in the M23 rebel group weeks earlier. Ntaganda's defeat by rival M23 commander Sultani Makenga was aided by Rwandan officials and demobilized Rwandan soldiers, said the report.

Ntaganda "clandestinely crossed the border into Rwanda using a small path in the Gasizi area with one escort," it said.

"He reached Kigali with the help of his family and arrived at the United States Embassy on 18 March where he requested to be transferred to the ICC without prior knowledge of Rwandan authorities," according to the 43-page report.

Rwanda subsequently arrested an individual accused of helping Ntaganda escape and interrogated the warlord's wife and brother, the experts said.

The career of Ntaganda, who has fought for rebels, militias and armies in both Rwanda and Congo in the last 20 years, reflects the tangled and shifting allegiances of a territory that has been repeatedly traumatized by genocide and violence.

Ntaganda said he was not guilty of war crimes during his first appearance at the International Criminal Court in March.

M23 is a Tutsi-dominated group of former Congolese soldiers that has demanded political concessions from President Joseph Kabila's government.

M23 CRIPPLED AFTER NTAGANDA DEFEAT

The U.N. experts report in October named Ntaganda as the leader controlling the M23 rebellion on the ground and added that he and other commanders received "direct military orders" from senior Rwandan military figures acting under instructions from Defense Minister James Kabarebe.

Rwanda vehemently denied supporting the M23, accusing the world of trying to blame it for Congo's unremitting troubles.

The latest experts report found "continuous - but limited - support to M23 from within Rwanda" and cooperation between elements of the Congolese military and a Rwandan Hutu rebel group against the M23 rebels.

Ntaganda had a network of contacts within Rwanda that he used to support his M23 faction against Makenga after the pair had disagreed over the management of M23, the experts said.

"To halt Ntaganda's activities, Rwandan authorities arrested some of the individuals who were part of this network," the experts said.

"Some Rwandan officers also provided limited material support to Makenga as he sought to defeat Ntaganda," found the report. "While some Rwandan officers had ensured Ntaganda of their assistance, in reality they had decide to support Makenga.

"Rwandan officers also fed disinformation to Ntaganda which precipitated his defeat. Former M23 soldiers who fought alongside Ntaganda reported that soldiers of the (Rwandan Defense Force) special forces that were deployed along the border provided Ntaganda with ammunition at the outset of fighting, which made him believe that he enjoyed RDF support."

As his troops began to run low on ammunition after two weeks of fighting, Ntaganda fled into Rwanda, where he feared Rwandan soldiers deployed on the border would kill him. The U.N. experts said that Makenga had also ordered his troops kill Ntaganda.

It was estimated that about 200 rebels from both sides were killed during the M23 split, the report said. Almost 800 rebels loyal to Ntaganda also fled into Rwanda after their defeat. The experts said Makenga was left with some 1,500 fighters spread across a 270 square mile area (700 sq km).

"Moreover M23 has lost the support of leaders and communities which had supported Ntaganda in northern Rwanda and stopped benefiting from the recruitment and financial networks he had established," the report said.

"The movement is unable to control its entire territory and suffers from poor morale and scores of desertions," it said.

Facebook to pull ads from pages with sex, violence

Facebook says it will no longer allow ads to appear on pages with sexual or violent content, as the online social network moves to appease marketers being associated with objectionable material.

The announcement on Friday came a month after several businesses pulled their ads from Facebook amid reports of pages on the site that promoted violence against women.

Facebook said at the time that it needed to improve its system for flagging and removing content that violated its community standards, which forbid users from posting content about hate-speech, threats and pornography, among other things.

Ads account for roughly 85 percent of revenue at Facebook, the world's largest social network with 1.1 billion users. Facebook said the changes would not have a meaningful impact on its business.

On Friday, Facebook said it also needed to do more to prevent situations in which ads are displayed alongside material that may not run afoul of its community standards but are deemed controversial nonetheless.

A Facebook page for a business that sells adult products, for example, will no longer feature ads. Previously such a page could feature ads along the right-hand side of the page so long as the page did not violate Facebook's prohibition on depicting nudity.

The move underscores the delicate balance for social media companies, which features a variety of unpredictable and sometimes unsavory content shared by users, but which rely on advertising to underpin their business.

"Our goal is to both preserve the freedoms of sharing on Facebook but also protect people and brands from certain types of content," Facebook said in a post on its website on Friday.

Facebook said that it would expand the scope of pages and groups on its website that should be ad-restricted and promised to remove ads from the flagged areas of the website by the end of the coming week.

Pages and groups that reference violence will also be off limits to ads, the company said. A Facebook spokeswoman noted that the policy would not apply to the pages of news organizations on Facebook.

Facebook said the process of flagging objectionable pages and removing ads would initially be done manually, but that the company will build an automated system to do the job in the coming weeks.

Missing American schooner 'probably had a catastrophic event'; 7 remain missing

A family sailing around the world and three others are feared to be lost at sea after their boat went missing three weeks ago after communicating with a meteorologist about an incoming storm. Search-and-rescue teams continue to look for signs of the historic schooner along the coast of New Zealand. NBC's Sara James reports.

The "biggest ever" search of the seas surrounding New Zealand turned up no sign of an American schooner that has been missing for more than three weeks, officials said Friday. ?

Search and Rescue officer Neville Blakemore said the 70-foot vessel ?probably had a catastrophic event? while traveling from New Zealand to Newcastle, Australia.

?The areas that have been searched have been absolutely massive and the area searched is the biggest area the Rescue Coordination Center of New Zealand has ever undertaken,? Blakemore said. ?The comprehensive search by the Orion [aircraft] the last couple of days has indicated that if the yacht was still afloat they would have seen it in the search area. So we are assuming that it's not in the search area and thus probably had a catastrophic event.?

Blakemore added that he was refusing to give up hope of finding survivors but said the search was now focusing on debris from wreckage.?

The New Zealand Herald identified four of the people on the vessel as David Dyche, 58; his wife, Rosemary, 60; their son David, 17; and Evi Nemreth, 73, of Boulder, Colo., a maritime technology expert and retired University of Colorado professor. A 35-year-old British man, a 28-year-old American man and an 18-year-old American woman were also on board.

A storm was reported near the vessel's last known location on June 4, the day the Nina vanished. It featured winds gusting up to 70 mph and 26-foot waves.

New Zealand-based meteorologist Bob McDavitt told the Associated Press?that one of the crew was concerned about the conditions when she called on a satellite phone on June 4. ? ?

"The weather's turned nasty, how do we get away from it," McDavitt quoted Nemreth as asking him. ?

He added: "She was quite controlled in her voice, it sounded like everything was under control."

Friends in Panama City, Fla., where the Nina often moored, ?told NBC station?WJHG that David Dyche was an ?accomplished captain? and said they were refusing to give up hope.

"You always worry anytime you've got a vessel in a bad weather situation,?Massalina Bayou marina director Bill Lloyd told WJHG on Thursday. ?But you don't handle a boat the size of Nina unless you're an accomplished captain.?

Blakemore, the rescue official, refused to rule out the possibility of survivors. However, he said that the ?logical conclusion? is that the boat sank rapidly, preventing the seven strong crew from sending out an SOS.

Unlike many locator beacons, he said that the one aboard Nina was not activated by water pressure and wouldn?t start automatically if the boat sank. However, he maintained that it would be unlikely that a craft the size of the Nina would sink. ??

?If the vessel got knocked over by a rogue wave it would have happened very, very quickly and they may not have had time to, to launch any life-saving equipment,? Blakemore added.

On her Facebook page, Rosemary Dyche said her family had planned a world tour.

?I am now on an adventure of a lifetime going around the world with my Wonderful husband who is my best friend and our youngest son," she wrote . "But I do Miss my 2 older sons Justin and Kevin and my grand kids Katelynn and Sean my mom. And all my friends. But we have to do it now while we can.??

Kerry resumes tough Israeli-Palestinian peace drive

AMMAN (Reuters) - Secretary of State John Kerry's drive to revive Middle East peace talks hit familiar warning signals on Thursday as Israel's prime minister stressed security needs and a Palestinian negotiator denounced Israeli settlement building.

Kerry, on his fifth visit to the region, will hold separate talks with Jordan's King Abdullah and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Amman and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem over the next three days.

Israeli settlement building on occupied land Palestinians seek for a state remains a main stumbling block to the resumption of peace talks that collapsed over the issue in 2010.

Kerry's arrival in Amman on Wednesday coincided with news that Israel had approved 69 new housing units in a Jewish settlement in East Jerusalem, while building continues elsewhere.

"Obviously steps like this are unhelpful, but we remain hopeful that both parties will recognize the opportunity and the necessity to go back to the table," the State Department said.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has long demanded that settlement activity stop before peace talks resume, despite U.S. and Israeli calls for negotiations without preconditions.

"Settlement activity in and around occupied East Jerusalem is one of the main reasons why the two-state solution is disappearing, as without East Jerusalem there will be no Palestinian state," Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, professing his support for creation of a Palestinian state, which he says must be demilitarized, has quietly frozen housing starts in settlements in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem.

But in a speech on Thursday, he appeared to put the United States on notice that he would stick to his security demands even at the risk of failed peace efforts should they resume.

Israelis, he said, "do not want a bi-national state" but they understand that security is a "fundamental condition for our existence".

Netanyahu has called for an Israeli military presence along the eastern border of a Palestinian state, a demand opposed by Abbas, and spoken of the danger of rocket fire at Israel from the West Bank unless tough security arrangements are agreed.

SEPTEMBER TARGET

Kerry has revealed few details of his strategy to bring the sides together. But he has said he wants to show progress before September, when the United Nations General Assembly, which has already granted de facto recognition to a Palestinian state, resumes its debate over the Middle East.

Israel is concerned that the Palestinians, in the absence of peace talks, could use the U.N. session as a springboard for further unilateral statehood moves.

Israeli newspapers expressed skepticism that Kerry's mission would achieve anything substantial.

"Kerry is still not trying to twist the leaders' arms to get them to sign a painful historic peace, but only to sit down together," said an editorial in Israel's popular Maariv daily.

"The fact that the Americans have become bogged down in the attempts to resume the talks is telling, in and of itself, of American weakness, and projects pessimism as to the process itself, which has not yet begun," it said.

Kerry has again called on Israeli and Palestinian leaders to take hard decisions for peace. "It is urgent because time is the enemy of a peace process," he said in Kuwait on Wednesday.

In a possible trial balloon related to Kerry's mission, Israel's Haaretz newspaper quoted an unnamed minister from Netanyahu's right-wing Likud party as saying the prime minister knew a peace deal would mean giving up most of the West Bank.

"Netanyahu understands that for a peace agreement, it will be necessary to withdraw from more than 90 percent of the West Bank and evacuate more than a few settlements," he said. "He knows this is one of the things that will be discussed."

In an address to the U.S. Congress in 2011, Netanyahu talked of a land-for-peace bargain, but gave no percentages.

The bulk of Israeli West Bank settlers live in blocs that take up 5-6 percent of the territory, so a pullout on the scale envisaged by the minister could leave most of them in place.

A spokesman for Netanyahu said he had no comment on the Haaretz report.

Most countries deem all Israeli settlements in the West Bank illegal. Israel, which captured the land in the 1967 Middle East War, disputes this. There are about 120 government-authorized settlements in the West Bank and dozens of outposts built by settlers without official sanction.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission is suing former MF Global CEO Jon Corzine for failure to supervise at the defunct firm.

In a statement, the regulator said it seeks to ban the former governor of New Jersey from working in the futures industry for his alleged role in the firm's bankruptcy 18 months ago.

The suit also targets the former treasurer of the company, Edith O'Brien, and alleges that MF Global misused funds prior to its collapse. The CFTC is asking for a $100 million penalty against the company.

MF Global collapsed in October 2011 under the weight of aggressive bets on sovereign debt, thin capital and questionable disclosures to investors. Customers were left reeling after it was revealed that more than $1 billion of their money could not be found.

Corzine is charged with violating his legal obligations to diligently supervise. O'Brien is charged with aiding and abetting the firm's misuse of customer funds.

I took a big step this week for my company ? I closed its virtual doors.

But I?m far from being out of business. I?ve decided to focus on content marketing clients who are also working with a marketing company for complementary services like social media and inbound marketing strategy.

Working with partners ? whether formal or informal ? has helped me reach new levels in my business. And it can do the same thing for yours too. But you need to be careful you aren?t compromising yourself, your ethics, or your sanity when you strike up a partnership.

Here are some of the do?s and don?ts that I wish I?d had when I first started working with partners.

DO look for complimentary partners for your SEO copywriting services.

Fortunately, we?re working in a time where the demand for copywriting and content marketing is at an all time high. Anyone involved with providing web marketing services to clients ? from web designers to social media consultants ? needs to know great content creators. If they don?t have one they trust an email away, they are doing their clients a big disservice.

Start your search by finding complimentary providers on LinkedIn, exploring small business sites, or looking for freelancing blogs where similar, but not competing, providers might be hanging out.

DO learn about the different ways of partnering with other providers.

Partnership doesn?t have to mean going into business together.

You can work with other providers under a referral agreement or set up a deal where you provide a service as part of their company ? but still retain your own clients. It all depends on what you and your potential partner decide to do.

Consider where you want to take your SEO copywriting business and then pick an option that works best for you.

DON?T jump into a partnership too soon.

Finding a good partnership is a lot like dating. You?re not going to run off to Vegas to get married the first night you go out. And if you do, you?re going to end up getting the partnership version of an annulment.

Network with other providers, but take things one project at a time until you get a good feel for how you work together. There?s nothing worse than getting into a contractual relationship with someone whose business practices you don?t respect.

DO evaluate your potential partner?s target market and marketing approach.

There are dozens of opportunities out there for working with another provider ? so you can afford to be choosy.

Pay close attention to your potential partner?s own marketing. Who are they working with and speaking to? This is important for two reasons. Finding a provider that works with your own target audience will make it easy for you to create client content ? and easy for you to create content for the fellow provider. Everyone needs blog posts and website copy, so chances are your partner will be looking to use your content services at some point. It helps to be familiar with their target audience and know who you?re writing to.

DON?T work without a contract.

No matter how friendly you may be with another provider, you?ll want to treat them just like any other client.

There needs to be contracts in place for each project or ? depending on the nature of your partnership ? for the length of time you?re working together. Even if you?re working with a fellow business owner it doesn?t mean that they have your best interests in mind.

DO pay close attention to their business practices.

Finding a good fit with another provider goes beyond the leads or projects you can bring one another.

Are you truly on the same page when it comes to growing your businesses? Case in point, after a single project with a particular SEO provider I came to realize his opinion of clients (that they were stupid and deserved to be duped) didn?t jive with the way that I want to do business. This isn?t always apparent based on their website, marketing and social media usage ? so keep things low on commitment until you know more about their business practices.

DON?T explore partnership unless you?re sure you can handle it.

If you?re someone who prefers to work on your own, partnership probably isn?t for you.

For me, I found the life of a solo copywriter to be sort of lonely. I always found myself conferring with SEO providers, web designers, and social media marketers so I decided to make it official. Do some soul searching and figure out what you want your business to look like in the future.

8 Designs That Rethink the Way We're Buried

The way we bury our dead hasn?t changed much over the past two thousand years. But it needs to change soon, according to a group of designers, philanthropic foundations, and funeral directors who sponsored a recent design competition to rethink burial traditions in the face of emerging problems with the status quo. It's a less less macabre concept than it sounds.

In fact, there are some pretty compelling reasons to change the way we bury each other. For one thing, we?re running out of space: in cities especially, cemetery overcrowding is a major problem. More importantly, both burial and cremation are surprisingly bad for the environment, not to mention the health of the living?our dental fillings, for example, release thousands of pounds of mercury into the atmosphere when we?re cremated.

What?s holding up a revolution in the way we bury our dead? The answer is complex. Most of us are uncomfortable with talking candidly about death, and ritual is there to help to calm that anxiety. There are also legal hurdles with unconventional burials, not to mention challenges from the established commercial industry that surrounds funerals. Still, the ?natural burial? movement, which seeks to make bural more eco-friendly, is gaining momentum. So are less conventional burial methods, from space-borne ashes to fireworks.

So in April, Designboom launched Design for Death, a competition that invited designers to propose new burial methods. In the end, they received 2,050 proposals and distributed over $100,000 in prize money. A group of jurors?including architect Richard Meier, artist Ray Ceasar, and the director of the National Funeral Directors Association?voted to pick the best.

Some of them are trite, others are powerful?and most are a bit of both. After all, the ways we mourn (and the ways we take and give comfort) differ for everyone. With that in mind, some of these designers make powerful arguments for change. Check them out below.

The Infinity Burial Project by Jae Rhim Lee

"By trying to preserve dead bodies, we deny death, poison the living, and further harm the environment," says MIT research fellow and artist, Jae Rhim Lee, the designer behind the so-called Mushroom Death Suit. The idea is simple: certain strains of mushrooms are actually able to remediate toxins. Knowing that the average body is host to 219 different chemicals?all of which seep into the soil when we decompose?Jae Rhim's proposal would use "death suit" covered in the mushrooms to prevent the spread of toxins into the soil.

Emergence by Enzo Pascual, Pierre Rivi?re

Three French designers proposed this eco-casket, made from biodegradable plastics and embedded with a tree seedling, as an alternative to a traditional steel, wood, or plastic box. The beautiful thing about their design? Co2 emitted from your body's decomposition will power a perpetually-glowing headstone on the surface. It's a self-powered memorial.

Urn for a Ceremony by Agnes Hegedus

Hungarian designer Agnes Hegedus created this elegant little urn for a style of burial that was once more popular: the water-based cremation. Except in this case, the body isn't cremated on the water. Rather, an urn containing your ashes floats out to sea aboard a clay pot, which is designed to sink slowly down to the ocean floor. The pots would cost only a few dollars to make.

"I Wish To Be Rain" by Studio PSK and Matter & Fact

The increasingly common practice of "cloud seeding," which alters the intensity of natural rainfall by literally "seeding" it with particular chemicals, serves as the basis for this idea from two UK design teams. "Humans now have the ability affect, control and even cause natural phenomena, whether it is rain, an earthquake or a flood," write the designers. "We wonder if a person could do this not just by their actions, but literally transform themselves into types of natural spectacle." The concept would use a weather balloon to carry your ashes into the sky?releasing them high above the earth, to be "rained" back down in millions of droplets of water. Though it's probably deeply illegal, it's still a lovely idea.

Design for Death Living by Ancunel Steyn

"Multifunctional land is not a non-renewable resource," argues Ancunel Steyn, the South African designer behind this proposal. "The question is, how can we reduce space required to store the dead?" Steyn proposed an urban design that would intersperse memorials with public infrastructure: from parks, to art galleries, to mixed-used commercial buildings. The memorials themselves would take up a very small, tissue box-sized space, stacked on a series of walls arranged around the site.

Family Tree by Loucas Papantoniou and Asta Sadauskaite

Two Lithuanian designers created this hexagonal design for an urn-storage system. The idea, as the title suggests, is to create a literal family tree of urns. There's also a digital element, which could come off as smart or tacky, depending on how you feel about SMS-based memorials: "The urn vault is made of wood, with an OLED display cap," explain the duo. "The display emits a serene, pulsing light that conveys spirituality and displays the name of the deceased with a short memorial message."

Souvenair by Chen Jiashan

This simple design, by French artist Chen Jiashan, is half windchime and half urn. "Why should we keep the deceased ones away from our eyes?," asks Jiashan. "The souvenair, small in size but clearly visible, can be hanged at home or in a public place. Its tiny and appeasing 'ding' recalls the presence of the loved one whenever some wind blows."
